All-you-can-eat archery lessons, Audubon pancakes and Camino de Santiago lessons

Ready. Objective. Learn. This week’s Outdoor Adventures features a few more ways to get smarter, whether it’s the basics of arrow shooting or the walking/biking pilgrimage to Spain known as the Camino de Santiago.

Hiking on an ancient lake: Hike 2.5 miles and experience ancient Lake Baroda in St. Joseph with Harbor Country Hikers at 10 a.m. September 3. The hike will start at Maiden Lane Park, 1051 Maiden Lane. From Michigan 63, just south of Interstate 94, go south on Hollywood Road, then west on Maiden Lane. The hike will follow June Trace, a corridor of trails and power lines, through parks, preserves and various habitats.

“Bike Ride” Pumpkinvine: An Elkhart County Parks Naturalist will lead a 10-mile round-trip bike ride on the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. September 3, from Abshire Park, 1302 E. Lincoln Ave ., Goshen. The group will drive to County Road 33 and back. All cyclists must bring their own bike, helmet and water bottle.

Holiday Pancakes: The South Bend-Elkhart Audubon Society will serve pancakes from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. on September 5 at its wildlife sanctuary, 59395 Clover Road, Mishawaka, south of George Wilson Park. Bring your own cooking utensils if you can. Donations accepted.

Shoot arrows: Take a beginner’s archery lesson with the staff at 5:30 p.m. on September 8 at St. Patrick’s County Park in South Bend. You will learn the basics of equipment and how to handle it safely. There will be practice shooting at an outside target from recurve bows, with the limbs moving away from the archer. All material will be provided. Not recommended for children under 12. The cost is $12 per person. Register before September 6 at 574-654-3155.

Camino class: Beginning September 12, a team of people who have completed the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage in Spain will lead a series of 10-week courses on making such pilgrimages on foot/by bike through the Forever Learning Institute in South Bend.
