DEC Hosts 14th Annual National School Archery Tournament

407 young archers remain on target at 2022 state tournament

St. Joseph by the Sea Wins High School Division; Arkport Central School wins Intermediate and Elementary Division

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) recently hosted the 14th Annual State Archery Tournament for New York Schools participating in the National Archery Program. Arc in Schools (NASP®). Twenty-two schools from 16 counties participated in the 2022 tournament held at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse.

“Again in person for the first time in three years, DEC hosted the annual National School Archery Tournament last week, giving participating students the opportunity to show off their archery skills. and meet peers from all over New York,” said DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos. “The National Archery in Schools Program is a great way to engage young people in outdoor activities and inspire them to stay true to the sport of archery for life.”

A total of 407 students participated from their home schools in one of three divisions: high school (grades 9-12); middle school (grades 6-8); and primary school (grades 4-5). Anthony Marino of St. Joseph by the Sea in Richmond County had the highest overall score and placed first among high school division male archers with a score of 292 out of a possible 300 points. Megan Aust of St. Joseph by the Sea in Richmond County was the top female archer overall, taking first place in the high school division with a score of 278. Both winners will receive a trophy and a bow and case Genesis Champion of New York. Awards were also given out in each of the three divisions for first through tenth place.

St. Joseph by the Sea in Richmond County was the first team in the high school division for the 8th consecutive year. The team that placed first in the middle and elementary school division was Arkport Central School in Steuben County. NASP® is hosting the US National Tournament in Louisville, KY, May 12-14.
