Duke advances three boats to C final at NCAA championships

SARASOTA, FL – The Duke Second Varsity Eight finished first in its C/D semifinal and each of the three Blue Devils boats advanced to their respective C final on Saturday at the NCAA Rowing Championships.

The 2V8 won their semifinal for the second straight season after doing so in the C/D semifinals at the 2021 NCAA Championships. Duke and Syracuse battled it out on the course with the Blue Devils holding a 1 advantage, 4 seconds at the 1,000 meter mark. Down the stretch, Duke managed to pull away and cross the finish line in a time of 6:42.344, beating a Syracuse boat that edged the Blue Devils in the ACC Championship Grand Finals there. at two weeks.

The Blue Devils will face USC, Syracuse, Rutgers, Oregon State and Boston University in the 2V8 C Final on Sunday at 8:46 a.m.

In the Varsity Eight semifinal that started the morning, Duke trailed Rutgers and USC with just 500 yards to go. The Blue Devils battled past the Trojans, however, and took second place with a time of 6:25.839. Sunday’s V8 C Final will see Duke line up against Gonzaga, Oregon State, Rutgers, Syracuse and USC at 9:10 a.m.

The Varsity Four capped the day for Duke with a third-place finish after the semifinal was delayed due to lightning in the area. When the Blue Devils entered the course at 12 p.m., they held a close gap to SMU and Penn halfway through before finally clocking a time of 7:30.480. The Duke V4 will kick off Sunday’s action with its Final C at 8:22 a.m., when the Blue Devils take on Oregon State, SMU, Syracuse, Penn and Gonzaga.
