Florida Marksman Benefit Shoot offers veterans a free night of bow fishing
Attention military veterans interested in bow fishing and good times – the 4th Annual Florida Marksman Benefit Shoot (FMBS) will be held on March 19, 2022 at Camp Mack near Lake Wales.
Founded in 2019 as a collaboration between Twisted Limbs Bowfishing, The Fallen Outdoors (TFO) and VetCatch (VC), FMBS was launched to provide veterans with a free night of bowfishing as a tribute to their service with volunteers providing boats and equipment for a day of fun and a friendly tournament. Over the past three years, this special event has taken off.
Captains Travis and Shanon Lanphar, along with Travis’ wife, Heather, own and operate Twisted Limbs Bowfishing, a popular Central Florida outfitter that offers saltwater and freshwater bowfishing charters in the region. According to Clan Lanphar, the dream has been to host a large group of veterans at a place and time where they can relax and gather for camaraderie, a little competition and enjoy the outdoors in the habitats. Florida naturals.
“Each year we would like to grow in order to bring more veterans outside to the FMBS event,” Heather said. “At each event, we brainstormed ideas for improvement and to generate more interest. We bring in speakers and special guests, host a tournament, and this year we’re planning our first-ever cornhole tournament.
If you’re wondering how cornhole fits into night bow fishing, well, these folks have a long day planned! Registration begins at 2 p.m. on March 19, and guests are free to visit the various booths and grab a bite to eat. The Cornhole Tournament runs from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. At 7:00 p.m., a draw will begin and bowfishing participants will head to their assigned vessels at approximately 7:45 p.m. At 12:30 p.m., boats must return for the weigh-in, with the tournament winners announced at 1am.
This event was certainly a success, as attendance at FMBS has steadily increased since 2019. So far this year, 91 veterinarians, representing 958 years of service, have registered; 26 boats have volunteered, but more are certainly needed.
“None of this would be possible without our Florida bowfishing community,” explained Heather. “These are these incredible people we can count on to selflessly give of their time, energy, money and boats to make such a huge impact in the lives of these veterans, even in just one night. !”
Money raised by FMBS benefits TFO and VC, and is used by these organizations to provide more outdoor opportunities for veterans. Over 50 organizations, such as Muzzy Bowfishing, AMS Bowfishing, and Innerloc Bowfishing, sponsor the event by donating raffle items (bows, guns, bags, hats, arrows, fishing trips, gift certificates, etc.) or money to cover expenses. Food trucks will also be on site and donating a portion of their sales, and a food drive has been held to supply a local homeless shelter.
