From archery to wilderness survival, Anaheim camp teaches an array of skills – Orange County Register

The campers were busy setting up camp when an announcement came from the instructor: “A storm will be here in 10 minutes from the northwest!”

With that, the students had to figure out which direction the storm was moving in and rearrange their camp so that all 12 campers could stay dry in a makeshift shelter.

As the seconds go by, the campers pile up inside the structure made of branches and covered with a tarpaulin. The rain came, simulated by a bag of water falling on the tarp, And as quickly as it came, the storm dissipated.

Campers stayed dry and made it past this part of Wilderness Survival Camp.

The camp is hosted by the City of Anaheim at the Oak Canyon Nature Center.

The week-long camp teaches first aid, collecting food and water, and building shelters using nature’s resources.

The camp is about getting kids out in nature, having fun and learning about outdoor safety, said Nikki Sandusky, the community services supervisor.

Campers also learned archery during the week-long camp.

On the final day, the children were divided into two teams and graded on the skills they had learned and how well they coped with the challenges.

“I think being able to make a shelter without just having a tent with you is really important,” said Charlotte Olsgaard, 13, who is hiking with her family.
