GA Department orders assault boats on the lake
SUPERIOR, Wisconsin (April 6, 2022) – The Putnam County Fire Department, located midway between Atlanta and Augusta, Georgia, has purchased two identical Lake Assault Boats that are scheduled for delivery later this year. The vessels will help the department provide fire suppression and emergency response services on Lake Oconee and Lake Sinclair, as well as the land surrounding the two.
“Our department protects 185 miles of shoreline, which includes hydroelectric facilities, single-family homes, vacation homes and isolated neighborhoods that are not serviced by fire hydrants,” said Department Fire Chief Thomas McClain. Putnam County Fire Department. “Among their many capabilities, these new fireboats can quickly deliver water from the lake to ground-based firefighting apparatus and will greatly enhance our service’s emergency response capabilities.”
The 26-foot-long fireboats feature a modified landing craft-style V-hull design with a 63-inch hydraulically operated bow door capable of carrying ATVs. The craft is powered by two 225 hp Yamaha outboard motors and includes a 1,250 gpm fire pump driven by a marinized V-6 engine. The deck-mounted monitor is rated at 1,250 gpm and incorporates a 2.5-inch closed discharge port. Other features include forward and aft storage compartments and three (3) automatic bilge pumps.
The T-shaped cockpit folds forward to allow clearance under low decks. Its components include an upper rack housing two emergency radios. The dash console features a 12-inch touchscreen that controls forward-looking infrared (FLIR), sonar with SideVu and DownVu, chartplotting, and GPS.
“When I became chief two years ago, we took a hard look at our on-water response capabilities because it was a challenge for us,” Chief McClain said. “We did our homework and researched the industry. We also met other departments in the area that use Lake Assault Boats, asked questions, and saw them up close in action. Most importantly, our community stepped up and passed a referendum to support buying through a special local options sales tax. We are very happy to have these fireboats joining our service. »
The Putnam County Fire Department is an association of volunteers and career organizations. The department’s protection area covers 345 square miles and operates 10 fire stations.
