Home team reacts to archery becoming a Missouri state sport

Archery is set to become Missouri’s official state sport, and Sarcoxie archers say they feel their hard work is finally being recognized.

SARCOXIA, Mo.–AArchery is set to become Missouri’s official state sport, and Sarcoxie archers say they feel their hard work is finally being recognized.

“Some of us are working hard to be where we are.”

The Sarcoxie High School archery team is on a roll, after picking up a recent victory. Kaycia Woolsey, archery coach at Sarcoxie High School says this recognition could not have come at a better time.

“We just came back from the Western National Championship where we won first place in both the bullseye and all three 3D competitions. So there is a lot of recognition. But the fact that it’s now the state sport is going to be recognized across the state of Missouri, I’m very happy about that.

Recognition is something Ian Morris, a junior from Sarcoxie says he would like to see more of.

“We’re recognized for what we do, but we’re not fully recognized,” Morris explained.

He says he hopes this new legislation will give their team better representation among other sports teams.

“At the senior awards, archery was not recognized as a sport at all. So we are congratulated, but we are not represented,” he said.

Woolsey says she hopes this recognition will have a broader impact on how the sport is viewed throughout Missouri.

“I hope people will really see that archery really is a sport, and some people don’t recognize it as such. Hope this helps them recognize… I think they chose archery as their state sport because it’s very popular in the state of Missouri now it’s the oldest sport of humanity. but it also helps with self-discipline. It helps to concentrate.

As the sport continues to grow throughout the show me state, archers say they are delighted with this new recognition.

The legislation awaits Governor Parson’s approval.
